My buddy at work (who's 5'8", ~220) just got a V-Star 650 this Spring (right after I got the '86 Savage). It was his first bike, and he had very little experience prior to getting on it. It's a nice looking bike that can probably go a hell of a lot faster than mine (6 speeds vs. 4 doesn't help), but his weighs more than the Savage, has less low-end torque, and is not as easy to maneuver in tight spaces. I rode his, and he mine, and we both agree that the Savage is built for back roads and traffic, and the V-Star would be better on the highways. Also, he's put ~2000 miles on in ~2 months and is wishing he had gotten the 1100.
